On Sunday morning, a sudden surge in the Kemi River washed away a 300‑metre makeshift wooden bridge connecting Kemi and Owan, severing road access between the Kemi‑Purana Jelm area and Jonai town. Locals reported that water levels began rising rapidly from about 11:00 a.m., and the river’s surge uprooted the bridge by around 11:30 a.m.
Residents said the bridge had been constructed roughly a year ago. During its construction, villagers warned authorities about strong monsoon currents and had demanded a permanent, pucca bridge; they had also expressed doubts about the long‑term stability of the temporary wooden structure.
The collapse has left large parts of the area in acute distress. Students from the Kemi area can no longer cross the river to reach the only local school, raising fears about attendance and upcoming examinations if the river remains above danger levels in the coming days. Farmers, too, are facing severe access problems during a critical phase of the agricultural season, unable to reach their fields.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep concern over the flood situation in Dhemaji and assured that the state government stands with the affected families. He said available resources are being mobilised for immediate safety and longer‑term rehabilitation. The chief minister has directed Water Resources Minister Atul Bora and Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta to proceed to Dhemaji to observe the situation firsthand and oversee relief operations.
The government has stated it is taking all necessary measures to mitigate flood impacts and accelerate restoration work. However, the administration has not yet issued an official statement on plans to rebuild the collapsed bridge or on alternative transport arrangements for students and farmers, even as local residents wait for a prompt solution.
