Tarani Kanta Roy, a veteran educationist, social activist, writer and respected resident of Chapar, died at around 11:30 pm after being admitted to the Chapar Community Health Centre on the night of June 26 following complaints of physical discomfort, hospital officials said. Doctors at the centre declared him dead, and his sudden passing has cast a deep shadow of grief over Chapar and the wider undivided Goalpara district.
Born in 1943 in Satyapur village in the Chapar area of Dhubri district, Roy overcame significant hardships to complete his school and college education. He began his professional life with the Assam State Transport Corporation but later resigned to pursue his passion for education in his native village.
Roy established a Middle English (ME) School in Satyapur and, after successfully developing the school, came into contact with former Assam Chief Minister and people’s leader Sarat Chandra Sinha. That association drew him further into social work and local politics.
He went on to become the founding principal of Chapar-Bahalpur College, now known as Ratnapith College, which was set up in 1978 through the collective efforts of people from the Chapar-Bahalpur area and under the leadership of Sarat Chandra Sinha. Roy served the institution with dedication and integrity until his retirement in 2002.
Throughout his life he remained active in civic and cultural organisations, including the Assam Sahitya Sabha, Krishak Odhikar Suraksha Samiti and Koch-Rajbongshi Sammilani, contributing to education, literature and farmers’ rights in the region.
News of his death drew local leaders and academics to his home to pay their respects. Among those who visited were Bilasipara MLA Jibesh Roy, Goalpara College Principal Dr. Subhash Barman, former Ratnapith College Principal Dr. Prabhash Das and former Assam Sahitya Sabha secretary Dr. Upendrajit Sarmah.
Roy’s lifelong commitment to education and community service left a lasting imprint on Chapar and the surrounding areas, and his passing was mourned across the district.
