Police Shoot Dead Prime Accused in Lucknow Builder Murder
A notorious criminal named Sanjay, also known as Sanjeev, who carried a Rs 1 lakh reward, was killed in a police encounter on Indira Canal Road in Lucknow in the early hours of Saturday, June 27, 2026, after he allegedly opened fire on officers who were trying to apprehend him. Police identified him as the prime accused in the murder of builder Sandeep Singh, who was shot dead in Lucknow’s PGI area on May 27, 2026. He was taken to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital after being wounded and was declared dead there.
Sanjeev was a native of Ambedkar Nagar district and, according to police, was wanted in several serious criminal cases, including multiple murders registered across Ambedkar Nagar, Basti and Ayodhya districts. Authorities said teams had been searching for him for weeks, especially in connection with the recent killing of the builder in Lucknow.
Officials said the encounter occurred during an operation to trace and arrest the accused. Police allege Sanjeev was intercepted early on June 27 but opened fire instead of surrendering. Officers returned fire, which police describe as an act of self-defence, and Sanjeev sustained gunshot injuries.
Sanjeev’s name emerged during the investigation into Sandeep Singh’s murder, after which police announced a Rs 1 lakh reward for information leading to his arrest. The killing of the builder drew significant attention in Uttar Pradesh amid reports that it stemmed from an old rivalry and a property dispute.
The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) said the murder was the result of a long-standing enmity linked to a land dispute and alleged that a contract of Rs 5 lakh had been placed to eliminate the builder. Police have already arrested several accused in the conspiracy; Dinesh Yadav, described by officials as the alleged mastermind, was arrested earlier and is currently in jail. Further details are awaited.
