Sikkim BJP Urges Centre for Bold Boost to Tourism Growth
Sikkim BJP president DR Thapa, accompanied by state BJP general secretary Arjun Rai, met Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, to press for increased central support for the state’s expanding tourism sector. The delegation outlined urgent needs for infrastructure, promotion and sustainable management as Sikkim experiences rising visitor numbers, a State BJP press release said.
The leaders told the minister that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Sikkim has raised the state’s national profile and helped trigger what the delegation described as a record influx of tourists this season, drawing both domestic and international interest. The delegation asked the Ministry of Tourism to back initiatives that would consolidate these gains and improve the visitor experience.
Thapa stressed that tourism is the backbone of Sikkim’s economy and one of the largest sources of livelihood for local communities. In light of growing tourist footfall, the BJP representatives sought enhanced central assistance for developing tourism infrastructure, promoting new destinations within the state, upgrading visitor facilities, and rolling out sustainable tourism measures to protect Sikkim’s fragile environment.
The state leadership also urged the ministry to help formulate forward-looking strategies and provide targeted support to strengthen Sikkim’s tourism ecosystem so the state can better attract, accommodate and manage larger numbers of visitors in the coming years, the release said.
Shekhawat acknowledged Sikkim’s tourism potential and, according to the State BJP, assured the delegation of the Ministry’s continued support for projects and policies aimed at promoting tourism and reinforcing tourism-related infrastructure in the state.
If implemented, the requested measures aim to balance visitor growth with conservation and local livelihoods by improving infrastructure and institutional capacity, a priority the delegation framed as essential to sustaining Sikkim’s long-term tourism prospects.
