Mizoram Narco Dept & Assam Rifles Seize 141g Heroin in Champhai
Officials from the Mizoram excise and narcotics department and the Assam Rifles seized more than 141 grams of heroin on the night of June 23, 2026, on a road between Zote and Bulfek villages in Champhai district, department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said on June 24, 2026. The joint operation led to the arrest of two women found with the consignment.
The arrested women were identified as Nianglamnuami, 26, and Lalnunmawii, 30, both residents of the Mual Nuam Bethel area in Champhai town. They have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and were produced before the district court in Champhai, Zohmingthanga said.
Zohmingthanga told reporters that since January 1, 2026, the department has seized 15.117 kg of heroin. During the same period authorities also recovered 62.704 kg of methamphetamine, 9.807 kg of crystal meth, and 128.544 kg of cannabis, along with controlled medicines and clinical drugs including cough syrup, alprazolam, nitrazepam, clonazepam and tramadol.
The spokesperson said at least 26 people, including three women, have died from drug abuse in Mizoram between January 1 and June 24, 2026. He added that a total of 2,023 drug-related deaths (1,776 males and 247 females) have been recorded in the state since 1984, when the first such death was reported.
Mizoram continues to be a key transit route for narcotics flowing from the Golden Triangle via Myanmar, with traffickers exploiting the state’s porous 404-kilometre international border, officials noted — a challenge that law enforcement agencies say makes sustained interdiction efforts essential.
