Remarkable Assam Butterfly Walk at Garbhanga Records 31 Species
Despite intermittent rain, 28 nature enthusiasts recorded 31 butterfly species from five families during a Butterfly Walk and Photography Programme organized by the WeForNature outreach initiative at Basistha on the edge of Guwahati’s Garbhanga Reserve Forest. The field event combined species documentation with practical sessions in identification and photography, bringing attention to local biodiversity amid challenging weather.
Participants came from varied professional backgrounds — including academia, research, healthcare, corporate, media, photography, government service and the tea industry — and spent the day surveying the reserve’s flora and fauna. The group documented an impressive range of butterflies, underscoring the ecological value of the Garbhanga fringe even under poor weather conditions.
Experts Pranjal Kumar Das and Nayanjyoti Moran led hands-on instruction in butterfly identification techniques and scientific documentation methods. Renowned wildlife photographer and Aaranyak Organizing Secretary Udayan Borthakur conducted interactive sessions on butterfly photography, offering practical tips to help participants capture and record species reliably.
Conservationists Monish Kumar Thapa, Akshay Upadhyaya and Lakhminandan Dutta spoke on butterfly behaviour, monitoring protocols and conservation practices, while Senior PRO Pranab Goswami coordinated the programme. Their guidance aimed to strengthen citizen science efforts and improve the quality of field records from such walks.
The event also served as a platform to highlight growing environmental concerns. Organizers warned that rapid habitat degradation and unplanned development continue to threaten Assam’s biodiversity and wildlife, stressing that regular monitoring, community engagement and responsible development are essential to protect local ecosystems.
