Manipur Congress Seeks Urgent Roadmap for Peace & Rehabilitation
Keisham Meghachandra, leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Manipur, has demanded a clear, time-bound roadmap from the state government to restore peace and normal life in the violence-hit state. In a post on X, he said residents have suffered prolonged hardship, displacement and disruption since ethnic violence broke out on May 3, 2023, and called on authorities to present a practical, transparent plan for restoring security and public confidence.
Meghachandra urged the BJP-led state government, which the report says has been in office for nearly five months, to set out specific timelines and steps for peace restoration, rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced families. He asked for details on how and when displaced persons will be able to return to their homes and on what measures will be taken to rebuild damaged property and livelihoods.
The Congress leader also pressed the government to explain what actions are being taken to ensure justice and security for victims and to promote reconciliation between affected communities. He said peace “cannot remain an open-ended promise” and called for an inclusive plan that addresses the concerns of all communities in Manipur.
Since May 2023, Manipur has seen violent clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities, leading to significant loss of life, large-scale displacement and widespread property damage. Meghachandra’s demand for a transparent, time-bound roadmap comes amid ongoing official efforts to restore normalcy and facilitate the safe return of displaced persons.
