Assam’s Nagaon Plans Sweeping Eviction Drive on Encroached Grazing Land
The Nagaon district administration is preparing a large-scale eviction drive at two sites in Hatichong Mouza after alleging encroachment on government grazing reserve land, officials said. Notices were reportedly issued on July 25, 2025, ordering occupants to vacate, but authorities say the directives were not followed, prompting plans to reclaim the land in the coming days.
Assam Cabinet Minister Keshab Mahanta and MLA Rupak Sharma recently visited the proposed eviction sites with senior government officials to assess the situation and review the extent of the alleged encroachments. The visits formed part of preparations and on-site inspections ahead of the operation, according to administration sources.
The operation will target Government Grazing Reserve No. 72 under Goraimari Pathar Kissam and Government Grazing Reserve Nos. 62 and 63 under Bogoriguri Pam Kissam, all located within the Nagaon Sadar Revenue Circle. Officials say portions of these notified grazing reserves have been occupied through construction of permanent residential structures.
Authorities also reported the excavation of ponds within the grazing reserve areas, which the administration views as further unauthorized alteration of government land. With no compliance to the July 25 notices, district officials say necessary arrangements are being made for an eviction exercise to remove the encroachments and restore the reserves.
The administration has indicated the drive will be carried out in the coming days; further operational details and a precise timeline have not been released. Related local enforcement activity — including recent preparations for an eviction drive in Negheribil — underscores a broader push by authorities to address alleged encroachment of government land in the district.
