West Asia War LIVE: Iran Warns U.S. After Trump Threat
Australia will extend fuel excise relief for an additional month, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, with petrol and diesel to be 16 cents per litre cheaper than normal prices in July — a cut he said would save Australians roughly $11 per tank as the country faces higher fuel costs amid the Iran war.
Mr Albanese said the government would “extend fuel excise relief for another month, making petrol and diesel 16 cents per litre cheaper versus normal prices for July, saving Australians around $11 per tank.” He described the move as short-term help to ease pressure on household budgets.
“This is more temporary support that will help take the sting out of petrol prices and help Australians with the cost of living,” Mr Albanese said in a statement.
The centre-left government had already halved the excise on fuel and diesel and removed a heavy road user charge for three months up to the end of June to help households cope with higher pump prices sparked by the conflict in West Asia.
Last month the government also extended a measure releasing petrol and diesel from domestic reserves until September; that release had been due to expire in July.
The excise relief is a temporary reduction in the fuel tax designed to lower retail prices at the pump while broader market pressures persist.
