Lightning Strikes IndiGo Plane at Kolkata Airport — Safety Update
Guwahati: On June 19, 2026, an Agartala-bound IndiGo aircraft was struck by lightning while parked at Aerobridge 56L of Kolkata Airport amid severe thunderstorms, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said. The aircraft, operating IndiGo flight 6E6068 and registered VT‑IPW, was on the ground when heavy rain and lightning affected Kolkata and neighbouring districts.
As a precaution, all passengers were safely deboarded after the lightning strike and no passenger injuries were reported. IndiGo arranged an alternate aircraft, VT‑ICD, to operate the service to Agartala. The affected plane remained on the stand while required safety inspections and procedures were carried out.
The Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) had earlier issued weather alerts as adverse conditions developed across the region. Thunderstorms and heavy rainfall persisted through the day, causing waterlogging in several areas and disrupting road traffic in and around Kolkata.
IndiGo said two ground personnel were slightly affected following the strike and were taken to hospital for evaluation; airport authorities later confirmed both were in normal condition. The airline posted on X that weather over Kolkata had impacted flight schedules, adding that it was closely monitoring the situation and providing full assistance to passengers. Travellers were advised to check flight status via the airline’s website or mobile app.
Airport officials and the airline emphasised that the lightning hit occurred while the aircraft was stationary and did not result in injuries to passengers. Safety inspections and standard procedures remained in place before the grounded aircraft could be cleared for further operations.
