Agartala: Authorities seized cash totalling Rs 1.68 crore (Rs 1,68,27,000) from two passengers at Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) Airport on Thursday, officials said, and launched a joint probe involving the Income Tax Department, Customs and the Tripura Police’s Special Branch.
Tripura Police’s Special Branch recovered the money during a routine security check. The two men, identified as Dattatraya Thakram Virkar, 36, and Sajal Sachin Devkar, 21, both residents of Maharashtra, were detained and the recovered funds were handed over to Income Tax and Customs officials for further investigation.
Preliminary inquiries indicate the seizure may be linked to a wider interstate cash transportation racket. Investigators found that the two accused had made multiple trips between Maharashtra and Agartala since the beginning of June, a pattern that has drawn the attention of multiple agencies.
According to police, the men allegedly arrived in Agartala carrying luggage, handed it to designated recipients and returned to Maharashtra the same day. Investigators say the suspects appeared unaware of the luggage passwords, which were likely communicated directly between senders and recipients-signs that the two may have been acting as couriers rather than principals.
Officials also allege the men were given new mobile phones for each trip, a tactic investigators suspect was intended to avoid electronic surveillance and reduce digital traces. Agencies are now jointly examining the cash’s source, intended destination and possible uses.
The probe remains active and officials have not disclosed whether formal charges have been filed. Income Tax, Customs and police sources said they will continue coordinated investigations to determine the full extent of the operation.
