Makum Restaurant Demolished Amid Assam Protests Over Victim’s Death
Reported by Manoj Kumar Ojha
The Tinsukia district administration on Tuesday evening demolished the Urban Taste Restaurant in Makum after widespread protests erupted over the death of a 45-year-old man who allegedly died from injuries sustained in an assault earlier this month. The action followed the death of Mukut Urang of Gangabari Gate Line, who died at around 4 am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.
Urang’s family say he was assaulted on June 11, and his death sparked anger across Makum. Members of the All Tea Tribes Students’ Association (ATTSA), the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and residents from the tea tribe community staged protests and blocked National Highway 37 for several hours, demanding justice, compensation for the bereaved family and strict action against those responsible.
ATTSA leaders warned that public demonstrations would continue until the victim’s family receives justice. The protests and public pressure prompted authorities to act against the restaurant that became the focus of local outrage.
Police sources said that during inspections carried out before the demolition, officers allegedly recovered “banned meat” from the restaurant premises and seized a pistol from an accused individual. In response to the unrest, Makum Police arrested the restaurant proprietor, identified as Imran Siddiqui, a resident of Purana Bazar in Borhapjan, and the establishment was sealed prior to demolition.
The demolition was carried out under tight security. Heavy police deployment remained in place across Makum at the time of filing to maintain law-and-order and prevent further escalation.
The incident has heightened tensions in the locality as community groups continue to press for a thorough investigation and accountability for those involved.
