Netanyahu, Trump Clash as US, Iran Agree to Halt War

By adminitfy
June 15, 2026 2 Min Read

On Monday, June 15, 2026, U.S. and Iranian officials announced a preliminary agreement to halt their months‑long war and begin a process to reopen the Strait of Hormuz — a deal that has already strained ties between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The framework reached by negotiators is interim and limited: it aims to pause active hostilities, restore safe passage through the Gulf and create a window for longer talks on Tehran’s nuclear programme and other disputes. Key elements reported include a temporary waiver of some U.S. oil sanctions and a timetable for further negotiations during a ceasefire period. The pact is explicitly preliminary, with substantive questions — notably Iran’s missile capabilities and regional proxy networks — left for follow‑on talks. (investing.com)

Israeli officials responded sharply within hours. Defence Minister Israel Katz said Israel would not withdraw from territory it has seized in southern Lebanon, Syria or Gaza and that Israeli forces would remain in what he called “security zones” for an indefinite period to protect border communities. Katz also warned that any Iranian attack in response to Israeli operations would be met with heavy retaliation. (newindianexpress.com)

Hard‑line ministers were even more blunt. National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir rejected the relevance of the U.S.‑Iran memorandum to Israel, saying publicly that “Trump’s agreement does not bind us,” and insisting Israel will make security decisions independently. Those statements signal a clear gap between Washington’s diplomacy and parts of Israel’s ruling coalition. (indianexpress.com)

The emerging rift is political as well as practical. Reuters and other outlets report that Netanyahu — who backed military pressure against Iran alongside Trump — now faces a choice between aligning with Washington’s trajectory toward a negotiated pause or hewing to a domestic security posture that resists limits on operations in Lebanon and Gaza. Trump has kept Israeli leaders informed of talks, but Israeli refusals to pull back risk undermining implementation on the ground. (marketscreener.com)

The agreement’s fate now depends on whether Washington can bridge its diplomatic deal with Iran and the security priorities of regional actors, notably Israel. Analysts say the interim deal reduces immediate risks to global oil markets and military escalation, but its durability will be tested if Israeli forces remain in contested zones or if elements of the Israeli government openly reject parts of the arrangement.
