Fuel Price Surge Alarms People and Government — Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday, June 14, 2026, said the recent rise in petrol and diesel prices has begun to hit citizens and is a matter of concern for the state government, blaming the increase on global geopolitical developments and disruptions in energy markets.

Speaking in a social media live session, Sarma said India’s heavy dependence on imported crude-about 90% of requirement-is making domestic fuel prices vulnerable to international developments, particularly the ongoing conflict in West Asia. He named supplier regions including Arab countries, Russia, the United States and Venezuela as sources of India’s crude oil imports.

Sarma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is taking steps to limit the impact of rising fuel costs on ordinary people and protect consumers from volatile global markets. He expressed hope that easing tensions in West Asia would normalise international markets and bring relief to households.

The chief minister warned that the current global economic situation has squeezed government finances, including Assam’s, and said managing post-election finances is a challenge amid these uncertainties. He added that a diplomatic understanding between the United States and Iran could help restore stability in global markets and allow governments to refocus on development work.

Beginning his address with gratitude, Sarma thanked voters for the decisive mandate won by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in the Assembly elections, calling the result unprecedented in the state’s political history and a lasting responsibility for his government. He also congratulated Prime Minister Modi on completing 12 years in office.

On welfare, Sarma said the administration has secured assent to the Uniform Civil Code and announced that cash transfers under the Orunodoi scheme will resume on August 2–3. Distribution of pulses, salt and sugar for ration card holders will restart, and other programmes, including Nijut Moina, are set to resume from August.

Outlining infrastructure plans, he said the tender for the proposed Gohpur–Numaligarh tunnel will be finalised within a month. The government plans a four-lane road linking Baihata Chariali and Mission Chariali to the Ring Road, a flyover between Jalukbari and Borjhar, and an express highway connecting Siliguri and Silchar via Silchar–Barapani–Guwahati, extending to Srirampur–Siliguri.

Sarma said the state will convert Rupsi Airport into a logistics hub, set up a medical college in every district, and develop new universities and engineering institutes. Work on the Kamakhya Corridor project has begun, and the government aims to create employment for two lakh youths while preserving Assam’s cultural identity and land.

The chief minister said Prime Minister Modi will be in Guwahati from July 1 to July 3, and indicated that a prominent foreign leader is also expected to visit during the same period.
