Guwahati Spruces Up Ahead of Assam CM’s International Visit from Jul 1
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday suggested that a high-profile international dignitary may accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a proposed visit to the state from July 1 to 3, saying the opening days of the month could become “one of the most important periods” in Assam’s recent history if the trip materialises. His comments came during a 24-minute live interaction on social media on June 14 in which he spoke about preparations underway in the run-up to the possible visit.
“The coming days, July 1, 2 and 3, could be among the most important days for Assam. Under the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we may get an opportunity to welcome an important and powerful international guest,” Sarma said, while also cautioning that no official announcement has yet been made. He added that the state is hopeful of the Prime Minister’s visit and that an “influential and internationally known dignitary” could accompany him, calling such a prospect a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Assam.
The remarks fuelled speculation about a possible visit by Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, although neither the Centre nor the Assam government has formally confirmed any programme. Sarma said the state government had already begun beautification and infrastructure works across Guwahati in anticipation of the visit, pointing to visible changes such as a “purple makeover” on the Ulubari Flyover amid the rumours.
Sarma appealed for public cooperation as the city is readied, acknowledging that the works might cause inconvenience and offering an advance apology. “When a city is being prepared for an event of this scale, there may be some inconvenience to the public. For that, I apologise,” he said.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to Assamese identity and development, asserting that culture and identity are not mere slogans and promising continued work for the state. Earlier on Sunday he visited several sites across Guwahati to review infrastructure projects, public facilities and ongoing development works, and highlighted ongoing efforts to expand higher education and healthcare across Assam. Official confirmation of dates and visiting dignitaries is still awaited.
