Probe Reveals 4,745 Unauthorised Hires; Arunachal Clears Wages
Itanagar, June 14, 2026 — The Arunachal Pradesh government has ordered the immediate release of monthly wages to 4,745 excess casual, contingency and work‑charged employees across various departments as interim relief, following a probe that found widespread unauthorised engagements beyond the state’s sanctioned strength.
An inquiry led by the Public Works Department’s principal secretary identified the 4,745 excess personnel, comprising 4,427 casual or contingency workers and 318 work‑charged employees. The probe found these appointments violated established procedures and were not cleared against government‑sanctioned posts.
While the government continues inter‑departmental consultations to examine the inquiry’s structural findings, it has lifted the wage freeze that had been in place since February 24, 2026. Officials said the resumption of payments was made on compassionate grounds to provide immediate relief to the affected workforce until a final policy decision is taken.
To curb future irregular appointments, authorities are processing recommendations from the public inquiry officer, including strict Division‑ and Drawing‑and‑Disbursing‑Officer (DDO)‑wise distribution of posts and tighter restrictions on transferring personnel across zones, circles and divisions.
The state notification specifies that district treasuries and sub‑treasuries will release funds only after receiving a joint, signed notification detailing the formal distribution of the posts. Verification must bear the joint signatures of both the respective head of department and the head of office.
The move seeks to balance enforcement of sanctioned staffing norms with immediate financial relief for thousands of workers affected by the probe. PTI
