Assam Seals Nagaon Rehabilitation Centre After Alleged Mismanagement
The Nagaon district administration has sealed the Wish Welfare Foundation rehabilitation centre after a joint inspection by the District Social Welfare Department and the district administration reportedly found violations of prescribed guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for rehabilitation facilities. The action follows repeated media reports alleging inhumane punishment and mismanagement at the centre, where patients were said to have been subjected to harsh treatment. Police have arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged irregularities, while the centre’s owner remains absconding.
Officials said the inspection found the centre was operating without adherence to the norms and guidelines laid down for rehabilitation facilities. Acting on those findings, Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sharma directed the relevant departments to take immediate action, after which the District Social Welfare Department and the administration moved to seal the premises.
Media scrutiny that preceded the inspection alleged systematic mistreatment and poor management at the facility, prompting public concern and the subsequent official response. The arrests were made following those reports and the inspection’s findings; authorities have tied the detentions to the irregularities identified at the centre.
This closure brings to three the number of rehabilitation centres sealed by the Nagaon district administration amid ongoing checks into compliance and functioning. The district’s recent measures signal heightened oversight of rehabilitation facilities to ensure they operate according to required standards and safeguard the welfare of patients.
