Amit Shah to Witness Landmark Assam-Nagaland Oil & Gas Pact
Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the signing of a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Centre and the governments of Assam and Nagaland for exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas along the Assam‑Nagaland border on the evening of June 11, 2026, at the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan and senior officials from the Centre and both state governments are scheduled to be present.
According to officials, the MoU is intended to enable exploration and production in the resource‑rich border areas that have largely remained untapped. The agreement aims to unlock hydrocarbon potential that was constrained for years by long‑standing interstate boundary disputes.
The initiative is being presented as a move toward regional cooperation and economic development in the Northeast. Officials say the step reflects the Centre’s emphasis on cooperative federalism while advancing energy security and domestic production of oil and gas.
Amit Shah’s presence at the signing is being viewed by observers as an indication of the strategic importance the government attaches to the deal — both for resolving differences between the states and for attracting investment to the energy sector.
Sources indicated the MoU will likely include provisions for joint exploration, revenue‑sharing mechanisms and arrangements to maintain law and order during operations. The pact is also expected to invite participation from public sector and private energy companies, which officials say could create employment and spur infrastructure improvements in the region.
The collaboration is framed as a confidence‑building measure between Assam and Nagaland, which have historically experienced tensions over territorial claims. With India’s rising energy needs and a government push to boost domestic output, the agreement is being positioned as significant for the country’s longer‑term energy strategy and for promoting development in the Northeast.
