US President Donald Trump has urged Iran not to retaliate after an Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs, even as Tehran warned it would deliver a “strong response”, according to Reuters. The exchange comes as Washington and Tehran reportedly edge close to a broader agreement that U.S. officials and Iranian interlocutors say could curb Iran’s nuclear activities and ease sanctions.
Trump criticised the Israeli strike, calling it “unnecessary” at a sensitive moment in negotiations and describing the incident Israel said it was responding to as “very small and meaningless,” saying it caused no deaths or injuries. He said he had asked Iran not to reply and urged all sides to show restraint because a deal that could bring stability to the region — including Lebanon — was near. Trump also indicated he expected a breakthrough within hours, according to reporting.
Iranian parliamentary officials reacted angrily. The head of Iran’s parliamentary National Security Committee warned of a “strong response” to the Israeli action. Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said the strike suggested the United States either lacked the will or the ability to honour commitments and accused Washington of effectively giving Israel a “green light” while pressing Tehran for concessions. He dismissed what he called a “good cop, bad cop” approach and warned that diplomacy would be difficult if the US failed to uphold its promises.
Israel’s military said it carried out a “precise strike” on a Hezbollah command centre in Beirut’s Dahiyeh, saying the attack was in retaliation for Hezbollah fire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that Israel “will not tolerate” attacks on its territory and that it would respond with military action when necessary.
Separately, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that a draft US‑Iran memorandum under discussion would require Tehran to commit not to develop nuclear weapons and to freeze its current nuclear programme until a final agreement is reached. The proposal reportedly calls for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping immediately, while the United States would lift a naval blockade on Iranian ports and begin easing sanctions. The draft also contemplates halting nuclear enrichment, according to the official.
The developments underscore the fragility of regional diplomacy: negotiators say a deal could reduce tensions across the Middle East, but military strikes and mutual distrust threaten to derail talks at a critical moment.
