Fresh Manipur Unrest: Two Feared Dead, Six Houses Burnt in Kamjong
Imphal, June 11, 2026 — Fresh violence was reported early Thursday in Manipur’s Kamjong district after unidentified assailants allegedly set fire to six houses in Kultuk Kuki village, about 30 kilometres from the district headquarters; preliminary reports say two people may have been killed, but authorities have not confirmed any casualties.
Kultuk is a small settlement of roughly 25 houses. Initial accounts say the attack occurred in the early hours of June 11 and that six dwellings were destroyed in the blaze, but the exact circumstances and motive remain unclear.
Kamjong police said a team has been dispatched to the village to assess the situation and carry out an investigation. Officials added that the identities of any victims, the full extent of damage and those responsible are still being ascertained.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions across Manipur following the recovery of six bodies believed to be those of Naga civilians who were abducted earlier; the United Naga Council (UNC) had announced that six people taken hostage on May 13 were found dead. On Wednesday night (June 10), an office of the Naga People’s Front (NPF) at Liangmai Taphou in Senapati district was set ablaze, local reports said, hours after the UNC’s announcement.
Local media and residents reported a mob attacked the NPF office before setting it on fire, with protesters blaming authorities for failing to secure the hostages’ release; no injuries were reported in that incident and police have not confirmed any arrests. The recovery of the bodies from Karam Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district also triggered unrest in several areas, with reports of goods-laden trucks being torched in Karong, Senapati, and demonstrations in Tamei.
Security personnel have been deployed in affected areas to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order. Statements from the Naga People’s Front and the state government were awaited at the time of filing this report.
