Tripura Teachers Empowered to Lead Sustainability in Classrooms
Guwahati, June 10 — Twenty-five teachers from schools across Tripura attended a day-long orientation on sustainability education in Agartala on June 7, organised by biodiversity conservation organisation Aaranyak in collaboration with the Tripura Science Forum and with support from Wipro Earthian. The programme, held in the conference hall of the Tripura State Pollution Control Board, drew a total of 45 participants, including forum members, board officials, teachers and Aaranyak staff.
The orientation aimed to clarify environmental concepts and equip teachers with practical strategies to promote sustainable practices among students and in local communities. Sessions combined interactive discussions, real-world examples and hands-on approaches to classroom integration.
“Inaugurating the programme, Panna Chakraborty, Secretary of the Tripura Science Forum, said: ‘The true dimension and magnitude of science extend far beyond our textbooks; science is an art of healthy living.’ She stressed that science education must nurture responsible citizens who can address environmental challenges through informed action and ethical values.
Jayanta Kumar Pathak, Assistant Director and Head (in-charge) of the Environment Education and Capacity Building Division at Aaranyak, outlined the organisation’s work in promoting environmental awareness, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development across Northeast India. He noted that Aaranyak has been advancing Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) in partnership with the Wipro Foundation since 2022 and highlighted the role of ESE in building critical life skills.
Renowned engineer and Tripura Science Forum Vice‑President Pramod Lal Ghosh urged teachers to embrace lifelong learning and use their influence to inspire equitable, sustainable change. The technical session, led by Tikendrajit Gogoi, Aaranyak’s ESE project officer, focused on interconnected themes of sustainability and biodiversity, waste management and water conservation, and offered methods for incorporating these topics into school curricula.
Certificates were presented to all participants at the close of the programme. Attendees left with a renewed commitment to integrate sustainability education into teaching practices, marking a step forward for environmental education and stewardship in Tripura.
