SKM Chalak Wing, Sarathi Welfare Board Decry Driver Assault at Lachung
The State-Level Chalak Wing of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) and the Sarathi Welfare Board have strongly condemned an incident at Lachung Zero Point in North Sikkim in which a Chalak Guruji was allegedly physically assaulted by personnel of the Indian Army earlier in the day. The organisations said the incident, widely circulated on social media, has drawn significant public concern.
In a joint statement, the two bodies said the footage and reports have the potential to create fear and insecurity among members of the public. They underscored the vital role played by Sikkim’s drivers-referred to as “Sarathi,” a term the groups say denotes a friend and guide who helps people reach their destinations safely.
While expressing concern over the alleged assault, the SKM Chalak Wing and the Sarathi Welfare Board reiterated their respect for the Indian Army, describing it as an institution known for discipline, professionalism and sacrifice in service to the nation. At the same time, they stressed the need for an impartial response to the incident.
The organisations said they have full faith in the state’s law-and-order system and urged civil authorities and Army officials to carry out a fair, transparent and immediate inquiry. They called for appropriate action based on the findings to ensure justice and to restore public confidence.
State Chalak Coordinator Shri Dichen Bhutia has reached the location and is reviewing the situation in coordination with Station House Officer (SHO) Shri Tilak Chettri and other concerned officials. The groups expressed hope that prompt and impartial action will be taken to address the matter and prevent similar incidents in the future.
