Shillong: The Jaintia National Council (JNC) Western Zone on Tuesday urged the Meghalaya government to immediately advertise recruitment for vacant government Lower Primary and Upper Primary teacher posts for candidates who have cleared the Meghalaya Teachers Eligibility Test (MTET). A delegation led by JNC Western Zone president Hamehi Bamon met Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui in Shillong and submitted a memorandum demanding early recruitment to tackle the state’s teacher shortage.
A copy of the memorandum was also handed to the Secretary of the Education Department. The JNC told the minister that about 677 teaching posts remain vacant across the state, and that the vacancies are spread through East Khasi Hills, Ri‑Bhoi, West Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, West and East Jaintia Hills and several districts in the Garo Hills.
The organisation said more than 31,000 candidates have already cleared the MTET, but warned that many of these qualified applicants are approaching or have passed the upper age limit for recruitment, risking the loss of employment opportunities. The JNC urged the government to expedite the process and to ensure recruitment is transparent and inclusive.
The council also linked the shortage of teachers to a decline in educational standards, saying that filling the vacant posts would improve learning outcomes and strengthen the state’s education system. “Increasing the number of teachers would not only provide employment opportunities to qualified candidates but also help enhance the overall quality of education in Meghalaya,” Bamon said after the meeting.
Responding to the delegation, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said the government would take necessary steps to initiate recruitment and is likely to issue advertisements for the vacant posts within the next few months. The JNC’s appeal underscores urgent staffing pressures in Meghalaya’s government schools and the immediate need to convert MTET qualifications into employment.
