New Counsel for Shyamkanu Mahanta in Ongoing Zubeen Garg Death Trial
Guwahati: Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the case linked to the death of singer Zubeen Garg, has appointed advocate Gaurab Chakraborty as his new legal counsel to represent him in the ongoing court proceedings, sources said. Mahanta’s move comes after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail application on 29th May.
According to reports, Chakraborty will formally take over Mahanta’s defence in forthcoming hearings before the Fast Track Court handling the matter. Mahanta is one of several people facing legal proceedings in connection with the probe into Garg’s death; the singer died in Singapore on 19th September.
Meanwhile, the Fast Track Court has completed arguments on bail applications filed by four other accused. After hearing submissions from both prosecution and defence, the court reserved its order on those pleas, officials said.
The trial is progressing with witness testimony central to the process. During the hearing, five witnesses were scheduled to record their statements before the court. Family members Garima Saikia Garg and Arun Garg attended the proceedings, arriving at the court around 11 a.m. Witnesses Baby Bora and Plabita Borkakati also appeared to give their statements as part of the ongoing record.
The case, which concerns the circumstances surrounding the death of one of Assam’s best-known cultural figures, continues to draw significant public attention. With a new defence counsel in place, Mahanta is expected to press his legal defence as the trial moves forward, and further developments are likely once the Fast Track Court announces its order on the pending bail applications.
