US–Iran War Live: Trump’s ‘Blow Up’ Threat if Peace Deal Fails
US President Donald Trump lashed out at Iran on Sunday as the war with Tehran entered its 100th day, calling Iranians “crazy people” and warning he would “blow up” the country if necessary, in an interview broadcast on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” Trump said he preferred a negotiated settlement but repeatedly threatened military action if talks failed, while asserting the two sides were “very close” to a deal.
Trump reiterated that he had acted to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, saying: “I had to stop a country — a very powerful, very dangerous country — from having a nuclear weapon because they’d use it. They’d blow up the world. They are nuts. They are crazy people.” He added that blocking Iran’s nuclear development was a service to the United States and the world, even though he said he “likes” them.
On the diplomatic track, Trump claimed negotiations were near conclusion: “We’re very close. We have a couple of points; they don’t even seem like big points. They’ve conceded the fact that they will not have nuclear weapons.” He said he wanted Iran not only to refrain from developing a weapon but also to agree not to purchase one, and that Tehran had pushed back “a little” before ultimately accepting those terms.
Despite the threats, Trump portrayed the conflict as limited rather than open-ended, saying, “I don’t like these endless wars. This is not an endless war. We have been doing this for three months and much of it has been under a pretty good form of ceasefire.” He also outlined a possible implementation step: “If we make a deal, we will go together — it will be our equipment — we will take it out and destroy it. If we don’t make a deal, then we are going to take them out militarily very harshly.”
When asked about Iran’s Supreme Leader, identified in the interview as Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, Trump asserted the leader was “seriously injured” and said, “I don’t want to say whether or not I know where he is, but there’s a good probability that I do. He’s very seriously injured.” He warned that agreeing to a deal would require Iran to take steps it had “never thought they’d be doing,” saying the change would be difficult after “47 years of getting away with whatever they wanted.”
