A Muslim woman, identified by police as Noor Sahida Begum, and her minor son were arrested on Saturday after the boy allegedly brought a beef item in his tiffin and tried to force two Hindu classmates to eat it at Habraghat Higher Secondary School in Goalpara district, Assam, police said. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday and came to light the following morning.
Police said the mother and son have been charged with criminal conspiracy, wrongful restraint, deliberate and malicious intention of outraging religious feelings, and a criminal act done by several persons under the BNS. The case was registered after the families of the two Hindu students filed FIRs at Krishnai police station, authorities added.
Four other Muslim students were reportedly with the arrested boy when the alleged attempt took place; police said those students were being questioned at Krishnai police station. At the time of filing, the minor and his mother were being produced before a local court, officials said.
The episode prompted a visit to the school on Saturday by the Goalpara district commissioner and the senior superintendent of police amid rising tensions in the area. Goalpara’s Krishnai locality has a significant Muslim population alongside a noticeable Hindu community, making the district sensitive to communal friction, police noted.
Officials have described the matter as under investigation and said further action will follow based on evidence and interrogation. No additional comments from the accused or their lawyers were reported in the initial police brief.
