Amit Shah Lays Foundation for Landmark Heritage Hotel in Tripura
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on June 5 laid the foundation stone for a major heritage hotel project at Kunjaban in Agartala, inaugurating work to convert the historic Pushpabanta Palace into a world-class heritage hospitality destination managed by Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the hospitality arm of the Tata Group. The move is being positioned as a significant step in Tripura’s tourism development strategy, aimed at leveraging the state’s royal legacy to attract visitors and investment.
The project will redevelop the Pushpabanta Palace, long regarded as a symbol of Tripura’s royal heritage, into a luxury heritage hotel. Officials say the redevelopment is designed to preserve the palace’s architectural significance while adapting the site for high-end hospitality use under IHCL’s management. Authorities expect the initiative to enhance the state’s tourism offering and raise Tripura’s profile as a cultural destination.
Beyond conservation and branding, the heritage hotel is expected to generate local employment and ancillary business opportunities in hospitality, transport and services. State and central officials have framed the project as a way to marry heritage preservation with economic development, though detailed timelines and investment figures were not provided in the announcement.
Shah’s visit to Tripura is a two-day trip during which he is also scheduled to inspect the India-Bangladesh border and chair a high-level security review meeting. The planned review will focus on border management, infiltration, human trafficking and smuggling-related issues, underlining the central government’s emphasis on security alongside development priorities in the region.
A planned visit by Shah to the 524-year-old Tripura Sundari Temple in Gomati district was cancelled due to inclement weather. Officials said Shah, who arrived in Agartala on the evening of June 4, was unable to proceed to the temple after his helicopter could not take off because of adverse weather conditions, forcing the visit to be called off.
State officials described the foundation-laying ceremony as a milestone for Tripura’s tourism roadmap and said further details on implementation, timelines and community engagement would follow as the project advances.
