Major Assam Cabinet Expansion: 4 New Faces to Take Oath June 5
Guwahati, June 4 — Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will expand his cabinet on Friday with the induction of 12 ministers, including four first-time entrants, a move he announced in a social media post on Thursday. The swearing-in is scheduled for 12:45 pm at the Jyoti-Bishnu International Auditorium.
The legislators set to take oath are Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Biswajit Daimary, Jayant Mallabaruah, Kaushik Rai, Keshab Mahanta, Krishnendu Paul, Nilima Devi, Pijush Hazarika, Ranoj Pegu and Susanta Borgohain. Their induction will raise the Assam cabinet’s strength to 17, including the chief minister.
Currently the council of ministers consists of Sarma and four cabinet colleagues — BJP leaders Ajanta Neog and Rameswar Teli, AGP president Atul Bora and BPF leader Charan Boro — who were sworn in on May 12. The expanded ministry brings in representatives from allied parties as well as several senior BJP leaders.
Four of the 12 ministers — Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Nilima Devi, Biswajit Daimary and Susanta Borgohain — will become cabinet members for the first time. Ashwini Ray Sarkar, 54, won the Golakganj seat in Dhubri by 30,782 votes in the recently concluded Assembly elections; he is a postgraduate and has declared no criminal cases. Nilima Devi, 61, was elected from Mangaldai with a margin of 23,936 votes and lists social work as her profession. Susanta Borgohain, 52, represents Demow in upper Assam and defeated Congress candidate Ajoy Kumar Gogoi by 33,528 votes; he is a graduate.
The expansion also includes experienced figures from the previous government. Biswajit Daimary, who served as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly during the last term, welcomed his inclusion and said: “This honour is not merely my personal achievement. It is a reflection of the blessings, trust and unwavering support of every resident of the Tamulpur constituency. For the past one week, sections of the media have been running a smear campaign against me, making it impossible for me to stay anywhere in peace. Despite such difficult times, Chief Minister Sarma reposed deep faith in me. For this, I express my heartfelt gratitude to him.”
Keshab Mahanta of the Asom Gana Parishad, a key BJP ally in the state, is another notable addition. Senior BJP leaders Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Jayant Mallabaruah, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, Pijush Hazarika and Ranoj Pegu are also set to join the expanded ministry.
