Student Protests Erupt Over Exam Failures at Tripura Central University
Agartala, 5th September 2024 — A significant student protest erupted at Tripura Central University (TCU) on Wednesday afternoon as first-semester students, who had failed their exams, blocked the national highway in a dramatic demonstration. The movement rapidly gained traction as students from various institutions joined the cause, demanding that all failing students be allowed to pass their exams.
By Thursday, the protest had expanded, enveloping students from Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University and Bir Bikram Memorial College. Protesters blocked the entrance to MBB University, insisting on their right to advance to the second semester. According to the students, they had already been admitted to the second semester before the results were released, with exams scheduled to commence on September 19.
Tensions heightened when MBB University announced first-semester results, revealing an alarming 80 percent failure rate among students from both colleges. The discontented students demanded the opportunity to sit for the second-semester exams, pledging to continue their protest until their demands were addressed.
Attempts to negotiate with the university vice-chancellor reportedly failed, further aggravating the students. They questioned the delayed release of results and contended that such a high failure rate was unjustifiable. Police from the College Tila outpost arrived to manage the situation but were unable to disperse the protesters. University officials eventually engaged in talks with the students to address their grievances.
