Khodang: Historic First Kuki-Zo Village Resettled After May 2023
Khodang, a Kuki‑Zo village in the buffer zone bordering Churachandpur, Kakching and Bishnupur districts, was officially resettled on Thursday, becoming the first Kuki‑Zo village to see residents return after displacement caused by the conflict that began on May 3, 2023. The ceremony marked a major step toward normalcy for families who fled during last year’s violence.
Saikot MLA Paolenlal inaugurated the resettlement by cutting a ribbon at a commemorative stone, and a dedication prayer was led by Pastor Zalal. A formal inaugural function drew Kuki civil society and student leaders, women’s groups, leaders of various chiefs’ associations and security personnel, officials said.
Villagers said Khodang was deserted on May 28, 2023, after an armed Meitei group allegedly attacked the settlement, forcing residents to flee and leave behind belongings. Of the more than 40 households in the village, most were torched and only about eight were left undamaged. Locals say the village remained empty for almost three years.
Village chief Jamminlien Haokip credited the resettlement to coordinated efforts by MLA Paolenlal, the district administration, the concerned SDO, civil society organisation leaders and the village authority. He said around 40 houses have been reconstructed so far, with about 10 more slated for construction under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme.
“I am very happy as we could resettle from today because of the steps taken by district officials, CSOs, and the village chief. Now we will be able to pursue our normal livelihood activities,” Haokip said, expressing relief at the return of families and the prospect of rebuilding everyday life.
