The Assam Tribune’s management in Guwahati has denied social media rumours that the newspaper group has been sold to industrialist Gautam Adani, calling the reports “completely baseless, false and defamatory.” In an official statement posted on the paper’s social channels, the board said no sale process of any kind has taken place and urged readers to disregard the circulating claims.
The clarification followed an unverified Facebook post on May 24, 2026, by a user identified as Gyanen Chakravarty, which alleged that the paper had been sold to Adani for Rs 420 crore. According to the management, that single post-reproduced and amplified by some individuals and even by certain media outlets without independent verification-sparked the widespread misinformation.
The Assam Tribune’s board expressed strong displeasure at the rapid spread of the story, saying the false report was shared without confirmation from any official or credible source. After the management’s rebuttal, many readers took to social media to express support for the newspaper, praising its integrity and welcoming the clarification.
The paper reminded readers of its 88-year history, noting that founder Radhagobinda Baruah and successive generations of the Baruah family have worked to preserve the publication’s credibility and public trust. The management said it remains committed to upholding the standards that have earned readers’ confidence over the past nine decades.
The board also warned that it will pursue strict legal action against individuals or organisations that create or circulate such false and damaging reports. The Assam Tribune urged the public and fellow media outlets to verify information with authoritative sources before sharing it, underscoring the wider harm caused by unchecked rumours.
