Guwahati, May 25 — Senior BJP MLA Biswajit Daimary on Monday blamed internal distrust and factionalism within the Congress for the party’s failure to elect a Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assam Assembly, saying a lack of confidence among legislators has prevented the party from reaching a consensus. Speaking to IANS, Daimary said the deadlock persisted even after a late-night Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting.
“There is no trust among them. Nobody is able to trust anyone else, and because of this, they have failed to elect the Leader of Opposition till now,” Daimary said, adding that when trust between leaders is lost, selecting leadership becomes extremely difficult. He accused factional politics of undermining the Congress’s organisational unity in Assam, saying one group backs one leader while another supports someone else.
The Congress, which emerged as the principal opposition in the 126-member Assam Assembly, has not yet officially named its LoP, prompting political speculation about rifts among senior legislators. Former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, who spoke to reporters on Sunday, said the party’s central leadership would decide the appointment after consulting its MLAs. Baghel said the CLP meeting concluded successfully with all Congress MLAs present and that a unanimous resolution authorised the high command to pick the Leader of Opposition, the Deputy Leader and the Chief Whip. “A unanimous resolution was passed authorising the high command to decide who will be the leader of the Legislature Party, Deputy Leader and Chief Whip,” he said.
The Congress currently holds 19 seats in the Assam Assembly, while the BJP-led alliance won 102 seats in the recent polls, leaving the opposition with a heavy defeat. The continued delay in naming an LoP may affect the opposition’s coordination and its role in holding the government to account as consultations with the central leadership continue. (IANS)
