Breaking: Supreme Court Urgently Reviews Delhi CM Kejriwal’s High-Stakes Bail Plea in Controversial Excise Policy Case
Supreme Court Hears Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail Plea in Excise Policy Case
Today, the Supreme Court of India began hearings on the bail application of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who challenges his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the contentious excise policy case. The session follows the Delhi High Court’s decision to extend Kejriwal’s judicial custody until September 11, 2024.
Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Kejriwal, argued that his client’s arrest was unwarranted. Singhvi contended that nearly all other accused in the case have been released, with Kejriwal being the exception. He criticized the CBI’s actions, describing the arrest as an "insurance measure" taken despite no arrests occurring for nearly two years.
Singhvi noted that the Supreme Court had previously deemed Kejriwal fit for release on two separate occasions. He questioned the justification for the arrest, pointing out, “The arrest was made on June 26 after a prolonged period without any action, which seems unjustified.”
Meanwhile, the Additional Solicitor General for the CBI requested equal time to present the agency’s case, stressing the ongoing legal deliberations.
Complicating matters, the Delhi High Court recently upheld Tihar Jail’s decision to deny Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sandeep Pathak’s request to visit Kejriwal, citing the misuse of visitation rights.
The CBI’s supplementary chargesheet implicates Kejriwal and his associates in benefiting from illicit funds connected to the excise policy. The charges allege that Kejriwal was involved in a conspiracy from the outset, aimed at privatizing the policy for financial gains.
This latest development continues to spotlight the contentious dynamics between Kejriwal’s administration and federal investigative agencies, adding another layer of complexity to an already intricate legal battle.
