Assam Tragedy: Two Missing Girls Found Dead in Kokrajhar; 2 Arrested
Assam police have arrested two men after the bodies of two minor girls were recovered from a roadside pond in Kokrajhar district on May 21, 2026. The victims, both residents of Lalkura Part‑II village, had gone to Dholmara Higher Secondary School in the morning and did not return home, police said.
Family members and local villagers later found the girls’ school bags, sandals and bicycles near the pond and alerted authorities, who sent a team from Kokrajhar Police Station to the scene. Officers recovered the two bodies from the water and notified senior police officials, the Executive Magistrate and the Circle Officer, who attended the site and ordered an inquest.
The bodies were taken to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for post‑mortem examination. Police said a preliminary post‑mortem report has since been received and that further forensic and investigative work is under way.
An FIR was lodged on the same day against two residents of nearby Deodoba village — 66‑year‑old Golam Mostafa and 42‑year‑old Ejhan Ali — alleging negligence in connection with the incident. The case was registered at Kokrajhar Police Station as Case No. 71/2026 under Sections 106(1) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Both accused were arrested, produced before court the following day and remanded to judicial custody.
Police said the investigation is continuing and officials have indicated the matter will be brought to a logical conclusion within the stipulated time. The arrests and the filing of charges for alleged negligence come as the community seeks answers about how the two schoolgirls came to be in the pond.
