West Asia Crisis Behind Fuel Hike: Guwahati MLA Vijay Kumar Gupta
Central Guwahati MLA Vijay Kumar Gupta on May 24 attributed the sharp rise in fuel prices and growing inflationary pressure across the country to the ongoing West Asia crisis, saying global instability and international conflicts have directly pushed up fuel costs and, by extension, the price of other goods and services.
Speaking to the media, Gupta said disruptions in international markets were filtering through to domestic prices, intensifying public concern over the cost of daily essentials.
“Since the West Asia crisis is ongoing, we are suffering from the price rise. Earlier fuel prices were around Rs 60, and now it has reached around Rs 120,” he said in response to questions about inflation and rising household costs.
Gupta also took aim at the state Opposition, claiming it was losing ground and needed a change in leadership and strategy. “The Opposition is getting weak. I think the Opposition party should now think about changing the leader. The Opposition party needs to play a good role,” he remarked.
His comments come amid growing public unrest in Assam over higher prices for fuel, medicines and essential commodities, with opposition parties and student organisations staging protests in various parts of the state and demanding government intervention to control inflation.
The remarks mirror tense exchanges between the ruling BJP and opposition benches during the current Assam Assembly session, where price rise, governance and public welfare have continued to dominate political debate.
