Padma Shri weaver Hemprabha Chutiya of Moran has halted part of her work after raising alarm over the inadequate preservation of five coloured cloth manuscripts she painstakingly produced, saying the fragile textile scriptures risk irreversible damage without a scientifically equipped repository. Chutiya, famed for weaving religious texts such as Gunamala, Namghosha and the Srimad Bhagavat Gita in Assamese, English and Sanskrit, has stopped work on the English and Hindi versions of Namghosha until proper conservation measures are put in place.
The five cloth texts — handwoven, coloured renditions of sacred works — are the result of years of labour and local cultural craftsmanship, Chutiya says. She argues these items require climate control, acid-free storage, specialist handling and other museum-grade safeguards to prevent fading, mould and physical deterioration. Without such measures, she warns, Assam risks losing unique cultural artefacts created by a living master of traditional weaving.
Chutiya has appealed in person to both former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and current Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, and says she received verbal assurances from both leaders. Despite those promises, she says, no concrete or adequate steps have been taken so far, leaving her frustrated and compelled to suspend part of her creative output.
The state Handloom and Textiles Department is constructing a training centre and a repository near Chutiya’s home in Abhaypur, Moran, but she contends that the facility will not meet the technical standards necessary to safeguard the coloured manuscripts. She has again made a public appeal through the media asking Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to support the construction of a modern, state-of-the-art museum and conservation facility designed for textile preservation.
At present, Chutiya and supporters await a formal response and specific action from the state government. Until the authorities provide suitable conservation infrastructure, the fate of these rare woven scriptures — and the continuation of Chutiya’s work in English and Hindi — remains uncertain.
