Guwahati, May 24: Four young men were killed and a fifth critically injured after two motorcycles collided head-on on the Mirza–Palashbari road in Kamrup district in the early hours of Sunday. The crash occurred at around 1 am and involved a Yamaha YZF-R15 and a Bajaj Pulsar N250.
Three riders-Jyoti Kalita of Mazirgaon, 22; Chandan Jannah from West Bengal; and Nikhil Das of Rangamati-were pronounced dead at the scene. All five victims were first taken to Palashbari Community Health Centre, where the three were declared dead on arrival. The remaining two were referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced care. Arnab Bornam of Nalbari, who had been shifted to GMCH, later succumbed to his injuries. The fifth rider, Dipankar Kalita, remains hospitalised in critical condition.
Police from Palashbari Police Station rushed to the site after receiving information about the crash. “We reached the site and found two mangled bikes as well as the five injured victims,” a police official said, adding that the scene indicated a high-impact collision.
Locals told police that Bornam and Jannah were riding the Yamaha R15, while Jyoti Kalita, Nikhil Das and Dipankar Kalita were on the Bajaj Pulsar N250. Family members said the three on the Pulsar were returning home after attending a Bihu programme in Rangamati when the collision occurred. Jyoti’s uncle, who said he was informed at around 4 am, described the news as a devastating shock: “I have been told that they were returning from a Bihu programme. Kalita was just 22. I got informed about the accident at around 4 am.”
Residents described the impact as particularly violent, consistent with a high-speed head-on crash on an open stretch late at night. “It was a head-on collision. One bike had two riders while the other had three,” a local resident said. Police have confirmed that a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
