The Supreme Court of India on Saturday, May 24, registered a suo motu case in the alleged dowry death of Noida resident Twisha Sharma, after her family raised claims of evidence tampering and procedural lapses in the investigation. A three-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, is scheduled to hear the matter on May 25. The case has been listed as “In Re: Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of a Young Girl at Her Matrimonial Home.”
Twisha, a model-turned-actor from Noida, married advocate Samarth Singh — son of retired district judge Giribala Singh — in December 2025. The couple had been living in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal. Twisha was found dead at her in‑laws’ residence on May 12. Her family subsequently alleged dowry harassment and abetment to suicide against her husband and in‑laws; an FIR was filed on May 15.
Police formed a six‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on May 16 to probe the case. On May 18, a sessions court in Bhopal rejected Samarth Singh’s bail plea, and police announced a reward for information leading to his arrest. The family on May 19 demanded an independent investigation, alleging attempts to malign the deceased’s character in public.
On May 20 the family met the state chief minister, who reportedly assured them he would recommend a CBI probe. That same day a Bhopal court refused a plea for a second post‑mortem examination, while police increased the reward for information on Samarth’s whereabouts. Authorities later issued a final notice to Giribala Singh to record her statement, and Samarth moved a fresh bail application.
According to his counsel, on May 22 Samarth Singh surrendered at a district court in Jabalpur and was taken into custody. The Supreme Court’s suo motu registration follows growing scrutiny of the investigation and public demands for an impartial, independent probe into the circumstances of Twisha Sharma’s death.
