Shocking Taxi Crime in Sikkim: Man Drugged, Robbed of Rs 7 Lakh
A man from Gyalshing district was allegedly drugged and robbed of Rs 7 lakh while travelling in a taxi from Gangtok to Tadong, police said on May 21. The incident is reported to have occurred on April 15 after the man boarded the taxi in Gangtok and reportedly lost consciousness during the journey.
Officials said the victim regained consciousness on April 17 at Cuttack Railway Station in Odisha and sought help from the Government Railway Police (GRP). He received medical treatment at a government hospital in Cuttack, police added.
The Cuttack GRP initially registered a zero FIR when the victim reported the matter. A zero FIR allows police to record a complaint regardless of jurisdiction so urgent action can be taken, authorities explained. The case was then transferred to Sadar Police Station in Gangtok on jurisdictional grounds.
Police said a formal FIR was registered at Sadar Police Station on May 20, and an investigation into the alleged drugging and theft is underway. Investigators are examining the circumstances of the taxi journey and the loss of cash, a sizeable sum that has prompted local police to pursue leads across states.
Authorities have so far provided only these details and said further updates will follow as the probe progresses.
