Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba met Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan at Lok Bhavan in Gangtok on Sunday, May 17, 2026, to thank him for serving as the chief guest at Sikkim’s 51st Statehood Day celebrations and to press several longstanding local demands. Subba said the Vice President’s presence had lent “immense dignity and significance” to the occasion that marks Sikkim’s transition to India’s 22nd state under the 36th Constitutional Amendment of 1975.
During the interaction, Subba told the Vice President — who also serves as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha — that the visit encouraged the people of Sikkim and underscored the state’s continued importance within India’s democratic and constitutional framework. He highlighted five decades of progress in peace, communal harmony, environmental conservation, sustainable development, education, youth empowerment and cultural preservation.
Subba reiterated Sikkim’s commitment to contributing to the national goal of “Viksit Bharat 2047,” citing the state’s ecological heritage, strategic location, cultural diversity and an educated youth population as assets for that vision. He also raised community-specific and constitutional concerns before the Vice President, framing them as matters of identity, historical justice and constitutional aspiration.
Key demands presented included the inclusion of 12 currently excluded communities in the Scheduled Tribe list, reservation of legislative seats for the Limboo and Tamang Scheduled Tribes in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly, and support for the proposed visit of the 17th Karmapa to Sikkim. Subba linked these requests to the need to safeguard Sikkim’s demographic balance and unique cultural identity.
He invoked the special protections afforded to Sikkim under Article 371F and the spirit of the May 8, 1973 agreement, asking the Vice President to extend his office’s support and goodwill toward fulfilling these longstanding aspirations of the people of Sikkim.
