AIUDF’s Badruddin Ajmal Urges Flexible Assembly Swearing-in for Hajj
AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal has written to the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly seeking flexibility for his MLA swearing-in after the Assembly’s first session was rescheduled to coincide with his departure for the Hajj. Ajmal told reporters the session, originally set for May 18, was later shifted to May 21 — the day he is due to leave for pilgrimage — and that he has formally informed the Speaker and the media of the clash. He said his swearing-in “will be done as per the convenience of the Speaker.”
Ajmal’s request raises a scheduling issue for the incoming legislature and places party logistics in the spotlight ahead of the session. The AIUDF chief also said his party will oppose any move to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) during the Assembly sitting, signalling a firm stance on what the party regards as a sensitive legal and social proposal.
AIUDF General Secretary Rafiqul Islam separately spoke out against proposals for a fresh socio-economic or citizenship-related survey in Assam. Islam argued that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise, which he noted was monitored over several years, has already undergone exhaustive scrutiny and should be treated as final. He warned that another survey or a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) would cause unnecessary inconvenience to people.
Islam also questioned earlier estimates of the number of alleged illegal immigrants in the state and pointed to internal discrepancies in the NRC outcome, noting that many among the roughly 19 lakh people excluded from the final NRC list have family members whose names were included. He suggested that corrections or clarifications could still be made later.
The developments put pressure on Assembly organizers to accommodate Ajmal’s absence or adjust procedures for oath-taking, while setting clear policy battles for the session on citizenship issues and the proposed UCC.
