Agartala, 16 May 2026 — An auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested in connection with the assault on photojournalist Bijoy Debnath at the Radhanagar petrol pump on 15 May 2026. The accused, identified as Suman Das, was apprehended from the Abhoynagar area of the city and will be produced before court as police seek three days of remand.
According to reports, Debnath had stopped to refuel his motorcycle at the Radhanagar petrol pump when an auto bearing registration number TR 01 J 3774 pulled in front of him. Witnesses say the driver hurled abusive language after Debnath protested the obstruction; when Debnath questioned the obscenities, the driver allegedly assaulted him, leaving the journalist injured and bleeding.
Police intervened promptly at the scene and arrested the accused, an action that has provided some relief to the local journalist community. Law enforcement officials are handling the case as inquiries continue into the circumstances that led to the attack.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety of media professionals in Agartala and the wider region, with calls from colleagues for a thorough investigation and measures to protect journalists on duty.
