Manipur: Attack Victim’s Kin Demands CM Khemchand’s Resignation
A cousin of a man attacked at Khongban Sanurok in Manipur has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Member of Parliament Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, accusing them of failing to restore peace and ensure the safety of civilians in the violence-hit state. She has also called for the withdrawal of central security forces from affected areas and the deployment of additional Manipur Police personnel instead.
Rosa, cousin of victim Ksh. Sushil, made the demands during a press conference held at Uyumpok Mamang Leikai on Tuesday morning. Local residents and members of the victim’s family attended the event to condemn the attack, which was reported a day earlier.
Questioning the government’s handling of the security situation, Rosa said that despite repeated assurances of restoring normalcy, several areas continue to face serious security concerns. The region remains among those severely affected by the ethnic violence that has gripped Manipur since May 2023.
Rosa also voiced concern over the recent attack on civilians at Nongshum, which she alleged was carried out by Kuki militants. She questioned the government’s ability to prevent repeated attacks and protect civilians, despite its claims of an improvement in the security situation across the state.
Calling for immediate intervention, she urged the authorities to take decisive steps to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents living in violence-affected areas.
Her demand for the withdrawal of central forces and a greater role for the Manipur Police comes amid continuing concerns over civilian security in the state. She maintained that the government must take concrete measures to prevent further loss of life and restore public confidence in the security arrangements.
