Triumphant Release: India’s First Satellite-Tagged Ganges Softshell Turtle
India’s first satellite-tagged Ganges softshell turtle (Nilssonia gangetica) was released into Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve on May 15, 2026, coinciding with Endangered Species Day. The release, announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was described by officials as a significant step for wildlife conservation in the region.
Posting on X on May 15, 2026, CM Sarma wrote, “A first for India at Kaziranga! Marking #EndangeredSpeciesDay, the country’s 1st satellite-tagged Ganges softshell turtle was released in @kaziranga_, a major step for wildlife conservation.” He added that it was “a proud moment for Assam as we continue to protect every species that calls our forests home.”
The Ganges softshell turtle is a freshwater reptile whose range is largely restricted to the Ganga, Indus and Mahanadi river systems across northern and eastern India. Recognisable by its flattened, leathery shell and long snout, the species is omnivorous and currently listed as Vulnerable. It is protected under Schedule I (Part II) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, making its possession and trade punishable under Indian law.
Officials say the satellite tag will allow for monitoring of the turtle’s movements and habitat use, providing data that can inform conservation actions in Kaziranga and connected river systems. Conservationists view such tracking as a tool to better understand threats — including habitat loss and fishing-related mortality — that affect riverine turtles across the region.
Endangered Species Day is observed globally on the third Friday of May to raise awareness about at-risk wildlife and the need to protect habitats. In 2026, that day fell on May 15, the date chosen for the satellite-tagged release at Kaziranga.
Kaziranga, better known for its population of one-horned rhinoceros and diverse riverine fauna, has in recent years highlighted conservation efforts for other threatened species. Authorities said the satellite-tagging initiative underscores Assam’s commitment to protecting lesser-known but vulnerable species alongside its flagship wildlife.
