Agartala, 14th May 2026: A parliamentary delegation from India, led by former Tripura Chief Minister and Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb in his capacity as Chairman of the India–Bhutan Friendship Group, is on an official visit to Bhutan to reinforce the close, time‑tested ties between the two neighbouring countries. The visit, which began this week, focused on enhancing cooperation across multiple sectors and deepening parliamentary engagement.
During the visit the delegation held meetings with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Discussions centered on expanding bilateral cooperation and reaffirming the longstanding tradition of friendship and mutual trust that underpins India‑Bhutan relations.
The Indian delegation includes Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh and other parliamentary members who exchanged views with their Bhutanese counterparts on strengthening legislative dialogue and promoting sustained institutional engagement between the two parliaments.
Biplab Kumar Deb expressed confidence that regular parliamentary exchanges would accelerate and deepen ongoing cooperation, underlining the role of legislature‑to‑legislature ties in complementing executive-level diplomacy. He also extended an invitation to the Bhutanese leadership to visit India, suggesting the visit could be timed to coincide with an upcoming parliamentary session.
Deb conveyed his gratitude to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the India–Bhutan Parliamentary Friendship Group and thanked the Bhutanese leadership for the warm hospitality extended to the delegation throughout the visit.
The talks reaffirmed both sides’ commitment to sustained dialogue and cooperative action, signaling a continued focus on parliamentary diplomacy as a means to strengthen the bilateral partnership.
