Reported by Bit Irom.
Imphal: A man was shot dead and his wife wounded in a suspected militant ambush on Wednesday, May 13, as they returned from Imphal to Noney district, officials said, in a second attack within hours of a separate ambush that killed three people in neighboring Kangpokpi. Security forces have launched cordon-and-search operations after the attacks, and no group has claimed responsibility so far.
The latest attack occurred at around 6:30 pm on May 13 when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the vehicle carrying Wilson Thanga and his wife near Joujangtek and Nungsai villages in Noney district. Thanga, a resident of Dolang village, was killed on the spot. His wife was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Officials said the deceased belonged to the Naga community.
Earlier on the same day, three leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association were killed and four others injured after unidentified assailants opened fire on two vehicles near Saheibung village under New Keithelmanbi Police Station in Kangpokpi district, police said in a morning bulletin issued on Thursday, May 14. The victims in that attack were reported to be members of the Thadou community.
Police and security forces are continuing search operations and “area domination” exercises in fringe and vulnerable areas across the state to locate the attackers and restore order. Authorities said movement of 221 vehicles carrying essential commodities along National Highway-37 has been ensured under security cover, and security convoys are being provided on sensitive stretches to facilitate safe transit.
The Manipur Police also reported that 113 nakas and checkpoints have been set up across hill and valley districts as part of heightened security measures. Investigations are ongoing into both incidents, and officials have appealed for calm while operations continue.
