Tripura PCC Chief Urges Anti-Racism Law for NE Students, Professionals
Reported by Mrinal Banik. Agartala: Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha on Wednesday urged Parliament to immediately enact a central anti-racial discrimination law, saying people from the Northeast face persistent harassment and bias in India’s metropolitan cities.
Speaking to reporters in Agartala, Saha said students and professionals from the region frequently encounter discrimination at workplaces, educational institutions and when seeking rented accommodation in cities such as Mumbai and Delhi. He cited demands from the All India Youth Congress for an anti-racial discrimination bill to be tabled in Parliament. “Youngsters from the Northeast face racial discrimination in metro cities. They face problems in workplaces, accommodation and education,” Saha said.
Saha’s comments followed a meeting of Northeast Congress leaders at Indira Bhavan, chaired by Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, where delegates discussed concrete measures to address the issue. He called for the establishment of a National Anti-Racial Discrimination Commission to provide a central mechanism for prevention, oversight and remedy.
In addition, Saha proposed the creation of state-level grievance redressal cells to ensure complaints of racial harassment are handled swiftly and locally. He referred to a recent incident in Mumbai in which, he alleged, nursing professionals from the Northeast were denied rented housing because of their racial identity.
Saha said such recurring incidents underscore the need for a dedicated legal framework to protect the rights and dignity of people from the Northeast living elsewhere in the country. He added that the Congress party will continue to press for introduction of the proposed legislation and institutional mechanisms discussed at the meeting.
