Guwahati, May 13 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a fresh rain alert for Assam and neighbouring northeastern states, forecasting scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) from May 12 to 16. “Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning, gusty winds (speed reaching 40–50 kmph) likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya during May 12–16,” the national weather forecaster said.

The IMD said isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Arunachal Pradesh from May 13–18 and in Assam from May 12–18. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may see isolated heavy rain between May 14–17. Very heavy rainfall is likely over Assam and Meghalaya during May 13–17, and over Arunachal Pradesh on May 17–18.

In the past 24 hours, heavy rains of 7–11 cm were recorded at isolated places across Sub‑Himalayan West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya. According to the IMD, the state has received 11 percent excess rainfall so far in the pre‑monsoon season, measured since March 1.

The weather office also said conditions are becoming favourable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over parts of the South Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands towards the end of this week. The warning comes alongside the IMD’s first-stage seasonal outlook for the June–September monsoon, which predicts that some areas of the Northeast are likely to receive normal to above‑normal rainfall this season, although pockets of deficit may persist in parts of Assam.

Readers in affected districts are advised to stay alert to local forecasts and updates from the IMD as conditions evolve.
