Agartala, 12 May 2026 — A two-day national seminar titled “Women in Policy and Polity: A Post-colonial Perspective,” jointly organised by the Departments of History and Economics at Ramakrishna College, opened on Tuesday at the college premises in Kailashahar and will continue until 13 May. The inaugural session took place in Room No. 18 and brought together academics, students and invited guests to discuss women’s roles in contemporary policy and politics from a post‑colonial standpoint.

The programme was formally inaugurated with a ceremonial lamp lighting and was attended by Principal Dr. Ajit Barman, Dr. Suparna Roy, Professor in the History Department of Assam University, Chandipur Block BDO Debapriya Das, and other distinguished guests. Organisers said the seminar aims to create a platform for interdisciplinary exchange on women’s policy, political participation and social structures.

In her inaugural address, Dr. Suparna Roy highlighted increasing female participation and empowerment across India. “India is passing through a period of social transformation where the gap between men and women is gradually narrowing despite existing inequalities,” she said, noting that in many educational institutions the number of female students now exceeds that of male students — a trend she described as evidence of growing family support for women’s education.

Dr. Roy also pointed to post‑independence initiatives focused on women’s development and emphasised the current policy emphasis on women‑led development nationwide. She drew historical parallels, recalling learned women of the Vedic era such as Gargi and Apala who held respected positions in education and public life, and observed that while women’s status declined during later periods due to invasions and social change, female leadership and courage persisted.

Citing Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar as an early exemplar, Dr. Roy said the 18th‑century ruler demonstrated leadership, administrative skill and commitment to social welfare long before modern women’s movements. The seminar’s organisers expressed hope that sessions over the next day would yield substantive discussions, research insights and policy ideas from scholars, researchers and students representing different institutions.
