Nagaland Officially Declared Corruption-Free Again in 2024

Dimapur | May 10 — Nagaland recorded zero fresh corruption cases in 2024, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s Crime in India 2024 report, which counted offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and related Indian Penal Code provisions. This is the second time in three years the State has reported no new graft cases, after registering none in 2022; it had recorded one case in 2023.

A decade-long review of NCRB figures compiled by The Morung Express shows a sharp decline in corruption case registrations in Nagaland. The State reported 11 cases in 2014, fell to 2 in 2015, rose again to 12 by 2017 and peaked at 16 in 2018, before dropping to near-zero levels-except for five cases in 2020-and registering no fresh cases in both 2022 and 2024.

NCRB data show Nagaland began 2024 with 19 corruption cases pending investigation from earlier years. During 2024, authorities submitted three final reports but did not file any chargesheets, leaving 16 cases under investigation at year-end. The report also notes that Nagaland’s Anti-Corruption Bureau, Vigilance and Lokayukta registered no new cases during 2024. In terms of trials, only two cases were pending trial at the start of the year and that number remained unchanged at the end.

Nationwide, anti-corruption enforcement remained active. State Anti-Corruption Bureaux across India registered 4,053 corruption cases in 2024, a slight fall of 0.4% from 4,069 cases in 2023. Of the 4,053 cases, 2,796 (69.0%) were recorded as trap cases-generally sting operations or caught-in-the-act incidents-while 579 cases (14.3%) were classified as criminal misconduct. There were 418 disproportionate-assets cases and 260 cases listed as “others.” The single case reported in Nagaland in 2023 had been placed in the “others” category.

The national report records 4,042 arrests in corruption cases during 2024, with 978 convictions and departmental action taken against 560 persons. At the start of 2024, 11,318 corruption cases were already pending investigation from previous years. During the year, 4,053 fresh cases were added, final reports were submitted in 770 cases, and chargesheets were filed in 3,554 cases. Despite these actions, 11,273 cases remained pending investigation across the country at the end of 2024.
